3 Keys to Praise that Breaks Through
“My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast; I will sing and give praise.
Awake, my glory! Awake, lute and harp! I will awaken the dawn.”
—Psalm 57:7-8
Have you ever experienced the kind of praise that actually shifts the atmosphere?
I’m not talking about a go-through-the-motions praise—a passive kum-ba-yah while sipping a lukewarm coffee. I’m talking about when life is tough, the adversary is doing everything he can to shut you down, and yet—you give God a praise anyway. And when you do, something shifts. You get revitalized, refreshed, and strengthened because God shows up.
It’s the kind of praise that makes the atmosphere electric with the Presence of God. A hallelujah that’s united, intentional, and full of faith.
And here’s the truth—God wants to release breakthrough in your life. But the key to accessing that breakthrough is praise.
A Breakthrough Blueprint from 2 Chronicles 20
In 2 Chronicles 20, Judah was under attack by three nations. King Jehoshaphat sought the Lord with this prayer:
“We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on You.” (v. 12)
The word of the Lord came through a descendant of Asaph—a worship leader from David’s time—and basically said, “You won’t need to fight this battle; the Lord will fight for you. But you still need to show up and position yourselves.”
So how did they respond?
With worship. With praise.
The next morning, as they marched out toward the battle, Jehoshaphat appointed the singers to go ahead of the army. As they were on the way, the praisers led the charge.
Here’s what happened:
“Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir... and they were defeated.” —2 Chronicles 20:22
It was such a total victory that it took them three days to gather all the spoil. They named that place The Valley of Berachah—the Valley of Blessing.
The Key to Breakthrough Was Praise.
The same is true for you. Maybe your enemies aren’t physical armies, but you’ve faced enemies like fear, anxiety, sickness, shame, discouragement, financial pressure, or relational strain.
And if we’re being honest, the temptation in those moments is to shrink back. To sit down in your spirit. To go quiet. To throw yourself a pity party.
But let’s be clear—that’s not the answer.
The answer is the same now as it was then. God gave Israel a key, and He’s given us that same key: Praise.
Not a passive, disengaged praise. Not a go-through-the-motions, checked-out praise.
But a praise that breaks through.
Praise that shifts the atmosphere.
Praise that silences the enemy.
Praise that strengthens you from the inside out.
Praise that magnifies how good God is—regardless of the circumstances.
Here are 3 Keys to Praise That Breaks Through
1. Refuse to Be Bullied
Isaiah prophesied that the Messiah would give “the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness.” (Isaiah 61:3)
Heaviness is a spirit. And it wants to push you down. It wants to depress you, sap your strength, and use your circumstances to discourage you.
But God’s answer to the spirit of heaviness isn’t self-pity—it’s the garment of praise.
When three nations rose against Israel, Jehoshaphat didn’t crumble. He sought the Lord. And the result? Praise.
It’s the same for you. You may feel overwhelmed by what’s coming against you, but you have to make a decision:
I refuse to be bullied.
2. Stand Up in Your Spirit
“Then the Levites... stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high.” —2 Chronicles 20:19
Don’t sit down in your spirit.
Your enemies want to push you down. God wants to lift you up.
Remember blind Bartimaeus? When he cried out to Jesus, the crowd told him to be quiet. They tried to shut him down. But he cried out all the more—and Jesus responded.
There’s a real danger that you could be singing the song of praise… while still sitting down in your spirit. Passive praise won’t shift anything.
But when you stand up in your spirit, something happens. The Levites stood up with voices loud and high. That’s engaged praise.
The word used in 2 Chronicles 20:21 is halal—it means to rave, to boast, to be clamorously foolish. This wasn’t quiet, conservative, disengaged praise. This was wild, wholehearted, God-centered praise.
If you want a breakthrough, you’ve got to stand up in your spirit. Engage with all that you are.
3. Sing the Song of Praise
This may sound obvious—but you’ve got to open your mouth and sing.
The Bible doesn’t say, “Enter His gates with soaking and into His courts with silence.”
It says to enter with thanks and praise! It says to come before His presence with singing. (Ps. 100).
I’m not against soaking or quiet meditation—but if you want a praise that breaks through, you’ve got to lift your voice.
The enemy wants to silence you. But your praise—silences him. When I say praise silences the enemy, I mean—the voices of fear, accusation, and intimidation losing their power in your life. That’s what praise does (more on that here).
“Out of the mouth of babes... You have ordained praise... to silence the enemy and the avenger.” (Psalm 8:2 / Matthew 21:16)
If the enemy can’t silence you, he’ll try to change your tune. Get you grumbling. Get you complaining. Get you talking more about your pain than your Provider.
But when you choose to bless God anyway—He fights for you.
Don’t let the battle change your song. Let your song change the battle.
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” —Proverbs 18:21
Praise Is a weapon of Warfare
Praise activates the warring nature of God.
“The Lord is a man of war; the Lord is His name.”
—Exodus 15:3
In response to praise, Isaiah prophesied that:
“The Lord shall go forth like a mighty man; He shall stir up His zeal like a man of war.
He shall cry out, yes, shout aloud; He shall prevail against His enemies.
—Isaiah 42:13
We see it with Jehoshaphat. We see it at Jericho. We see it over and over.
When you lift your praise, God lifts His sword.
This Is Your Breakthrough Position:
✔️ Refuse to be bullied.
✔️ Stand up in your spirit.
✔️ Sing the song of praise.
Watch as God brings breakthrough, refreshing, strength, and victory in your life.
Final Declaration:
“I refuse to be bullied by fear, shame, accusation, trauma, sickness, or pressure. I stand up in my spirit and bless the Lord. Praise is my position. Praise is my weapon. I will bless the Lord! This is my Valley of Blessing!”
